Some household projects

One thing I've been meaning to get to is my mantal. This week it went from this

So, my next problem is where we store the extra blankets in the living room, because this obviously isn't working

Ideas?

Family Night

Friday nights are family nights. Sometimes we watch a movie, sometimes we go out, sometimes we play games or do projects. Tonight we all went to Staples to buy a new printer and then out for ice cream.

Mmmmm! Ice cream!

Whatcha got, DaDa?

There's nothing sweeter than pursed baby lips-- not even ice cream!

For a while, he wouldn't eat it. He just kept touching his lips to the ice cream.

Nicholas was very excited that he got a free "baby" cone.

Flavor? Cotton candy with pop rocks. Bleh!

Isn't it great to have a choice?

Nicholas, trying covertly to give Grimmauld, his Webkinz, some cone.

No words.

After ice cream, we came home, had family meeting (some day I'll have to post our minutes. They're a hoot.) and the read a chapter of Prisoner of Azkaban.

Beautiful Day!

No pictures, but we really had a lovely day today.

We started out making smoothies for breakfast. I let the kids choose, and Michael came up with blueberries, strawberries, and some mint from our tea garden. I also made a batch of strawberry-banana smoothies. What was leftover, we froze to make ice pops.

After breakfast and the laundry was put away/hung out, everyone worked on their own projects. I had some phone calls to make and Daniel chased a ball around. Katie Grace worked on varnishing a little chest of drawers that she got for her birthday, and Michael and Nicholas went outside. I also got a ton of cooking done. I browned some pork chops and put them in the crock pot for dinner, sliced some cukes and put them in dressing, and popped some soup bones in the oven to roast for making broth.

Then Katie Grace read to me. She was able to read Fancy Nancy all by herself!

We went outside and worked on the garden. We got eggplant, watermelon, cauliflower, cabbage, and zuke seedlings in. I'd still like to get some broccoli and pumpkins. Tomorrow we'll try to get the tomatoes and peppers in. I need to score some more pepper plants though.

Then we came in and I nursed the baby down to a nap. Lunch was a bit of a quandry. We were going to make a peanut butter apple dip, but I forgot to thaw cream cheese. Then we were going to make burritos, but we had no refried beans. Finally we settled on peanut butter and jelly pinwheels.

We quickly made a cake to go with dinner and popped it in the oven and then I read another chapter of Five Little Peppers. This is one of those never-ending read-alouds! I took Michael to orchestra while Chip stayed with the littles, and I got a whole half-hour to myself. I spent it picking up more garden stuff.

Got home, snuggled the baby, iced the cake, tidied the downstairs, cleaned the baseboards and closet in my room, and was even able to get a little work done in the attic while Katie Grace entertained Daniel.

Chip came home and I pulled the clothes off the line and then we had an early dinner. Michael had an early soccer game tonight so we all went to the park. Around the second quarter, I took Katie Grace and Nicholas for a walk. We saw a caterpillar, which was apparently very exciting. Michael's team lost, which is nothing new, but I am so proud of how hard he tries and perseveres, and what a good sport he is.

We came home, ate cake, and read another chapter of Prisoner of Azkaban.

Cuteness for sale!

Thursday, May 22, 2008

Huh. I completely lost two days.

Seriously. I spent the day thinking it was Tuesday. That is, until I got a phone call from my friend Donna asking what about the LLL yard sale we're supposed to be having tomorrow. And then Emily beeped in on that phone call to ask about the LLL yard sale we're supposed to be having tomorrow at her house. And during that phone call, Amber beeped in to ask about the LLL yard sale we're supposed to be having tomorrow.

So... um... yeah, I guess we're having a LLL yard sale tomorrow. And it's not Tuesday. Whoops.

In my defense, the pediatric ophthalmologist was able to get Michael in three months early, and I think that hour-and-a-half each way trip threw me off.

Saturday Morning at the Growers' Market

Peachy keen!

Saturday was the 25th anniversary of our neighborhood market. Not only do they make awesome subs, but they have a little book where they write down our purchases and then we pay one bill once a month. As one online friend said, "It's like in Little House on the Prairie!" Everyone grabbed their slings and their babies and we were off!

The scene from a block away.

Michael writes a family newspaper, published as often as the spirit moves him. The lead story this week was Ed's Market's anniversary celebration! We copied the front page and Michael gave it to Peachy, the store owner. Michael and Peachy have this thing going. They genuinely seem to enjoy each other. I don't get it, but it's really sweet.

Peachy got the on-site DJ to interview Michael for the radio. He did really well. We should seriously consider renting him out for events.

It was a lovely event with great food. Thankfully the rain held off until the afternoon.

Party On!

Beautiful birthday girl, making a curtsy.

Katie Grace and two of her best buddies from church. Jillian had to go to a jazz band concert, but Jennifer stayed for the party. And I am so glad she did! She was a real blessing and help with the crafts and games. Plus, Katie Grace just loves both these girls.

Making magic fairy wands.

Pin the fairy on the flower.

This was one of my best mommy ideas EVER. I had Michael invite a friend. Whereas normally Michael would have been tormenting Katie and her guests, with Mitchell there, the two of them hung out in the back of the hall, played their own twisted version of Monopoly, and consumed copious amounts of snacks. They surfaced only to help whack the pinata and eat cake.

Daniel. Still one. He likes to tell people.

That was one tough pinata.

Finally, it cracked!

Even Daniel found some loot--a hair band! I tried to put some non-candy in the pinata-- hair bands, erasers, stickers. Daniel has a bit of a hair band obsession. He'll sit and twirl them around in his hands while making growling sounds. It's cute and scary, all at once!

Present time!

Katie Grace always has time to love on her baby brother!

Balloon silliness.

The cake! Yes, it was storebought. No, I don't feel guilty.

Katie Grace and Ariana playing with one of Katie Grace's fairy books.

"I have a boo boo".
An invisible, non-existant boo boo.
Typical Nicholas!

And who doesn't like balloons! I mean, yeah they're a giant choking hazard and they're probably toxic and and they aren't good for the environment and they scare the poop out of Chip when they pop, but they kept Daniel busy, so they must be good.
